SUMMARY:Conversation on Assessing Meaningful Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn order to better assess the extent\, process\, and impact of community engagement\, the National Academy of Medicine Leadership Consortium partnered with a diverse and inclusive Organizing Committee to develop a new resource illustrating the dynamic relationship between community engagement and measurable and meaningful outcomes. This tool\, called the Assessing Community Engagement Conceptual Model (ACE-CoM)\, demonstrates how meaningful community engagement can lead to strengthened relationships and alliances\, expanded knowledge\, improved health and health care programs and policies\, and thriving communities – and ultimately health equity through transformed systems for health. Recognizing that a variety of systems (e.g.\, housing\, education) ultimately influence health\, it is critical that community engagement be at the center and that community engagement be measured. \nDuring this conversation\, participants will: \n\ndiscuss the relationship between community engagement\, meaningful outcomes in health and health care\, and transformed systems for health;\nengage the perspectives of Organizing Committee members on the development and potential implementation of the ACE-CoM;\ndescribe forthcoming resources to support assessing community engagement; and\nanswer questions and share reflections on the ACE-CoM.\n\n______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAgenda \n11:00 am ET | Community Engagement Impact Story\nThis session will start with an impact story demonstrating what one partnership has done to engage their community and the impact and influence of that engagement. \n\nDebra Oto-Kent\, Health Education Council\n\n 11:05 am ET | Welcome & Overview\nOn behalf of the Organizing Committee guiding this effort and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, welcoming remarks and an overview of the agenda will be provided. \n\nAnn Hwang\, Harvard Medical School (Co-chair)\nMona Shah\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\n\n11:15 am ET | Review of the Assessing Community Engagement Conceptual Model\nReview the development and design of the conceptual model\, which aims to assess the extent\, process\, and impact of community engagement\, and highlight forthcoming products from the Organizing Committee. \n\nAyodola Anise\, National Academy of Medicine\n\n11:25 am ET | Conversation on the Implementation and Use of the Assessing Community Engagement Conceptual Model\nPerspectives from Organizing Committee members on the potential uses of the conceptual model. \nModerator: Sinsi Hernández-Cancio\, National Partnership for Women & Families (Co-chair) \n\nTekisha Dwan Everette\, Health Equity Solutions\nFelica Jones\, Healthy African American Families II\nJ. SUMMARY:NIH Rural Health Day Seminar: Structural-Level Determinants of Rural Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 virtual NIH Rural Health Seminar features engaging panel discussions\, presentations and early-stage investigator talks\, organized in three tracks: \n \n\nSociocultural and economic determinants of health in rural populations\nPhysical environmental determinants of health in rural populations\nEvaluation\, measurements\, and policy implications on rural health\n\nAttendees will come away from this virtual seminar with an understanding of the impact of structural determinants on rural populations and the need for multi-level interventions to reduce rural health disparities. \nAbout the Seminar\nThe National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health sets aside the third Thursday of every November to observe National Rural Health Day. The NIH Rural Health Special Interest Group (RH SIG) hosts the Rural Health Seminar as their main activity to stimulate multidisciplinary discussions to advance rural health research. \nThe NIH RH SIG works to raise awareness of rural health issues and improve biomedical\, behavioral/social science\, intervention and implementation research aimed at improving disease prevention\, self-management\, and care delivery across the care continuum. Our goal is to advance our understanding of rural health disparities and stimulate research to identify multi-level\, evidence-based solutions to improve rural health outcomes. We connect translational\, clinical\, and community-based researchers from diverse disciplines throughout the NIH\, to research communities\, and decision makers. Among researchers\, we also provide opportunities for professional development\, networking\, and community engagement. \nCo-Sponsoring NIH Institutes and Centers\nNational Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)\nNational Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)\nNational Institute on Aging (NIA)\nNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) \nPlanning Committee\nPriscah Mujuru DrPH\, MPH\, RN\, NIMHD\, Chair\nXinzhi Zhang\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, NHLBI\, Co-Chair\nMadhumita Sinha\, M.D.\, NIDDK\, Co-Chair\nDiane Adger-Johnson\, MPH\, NIAID\nLigia Artiles\, M.A.\, NIMHD\nMichael Banyas\, M.S.\, NIMHD\nSujata Bardhan\, Ph.D.\, NICHD\nRick Berzon\, DrPH\, NIMHD\nBehrous Davani\, Ph.D.\, NIGMS\nBrandin DeChabert\, B.A. NIDA\nTroy Dildine\, B.A.\, NCCIH\nQi Duan\, Ph.D.\, NIBIB\nAndrew Eron\, M.A.\, NIMHD\nMelissa Green Parker\, Ph.D.\, OD\nTanetta Isler\, M.S.\, NCATS\nPatricia Jones\, DrPH\, MPH\, M.S.\, MBA\, NIA\nLindsey Martin\, Ph.D.\, NIEHS\nShelly Pollard\, MBA\, NIMHD\nAntonello Punturieri\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, NHLBI \n
