Using pediatric asthma management as a case study, Dr. Vanessa Maier [2nd Round Pilot Awardee](Medical Director, School Health Program, The MetroHealth System) and Katie Feldman (Managing Attorney, Health & Opportunity, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland) will discuss how improving children’s health requires more than just medical care. School-based health centers, medical-legal partnerships (MLP) and environmental justice efforts all help reduce disparities and improve health outcomes. Hear how Legal Aid’s MLP sites in pediatrics at MetroHealth and at the UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children use legal services as an intervention to address housing conditions, advocate for specialized educational plans, and develop plans for families’ economic and social needs.

The Center for Health Equity Engagement Education and Research was established by Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center to reduce health disparities through research on root causes, mechanisms, and interventions; through education of students, providers, and policy makers; and through partnership with community organizations and government agencies.
The aims of this Core are to facilitate community based research among faculty, students, community organizations, and community residents.
